UPPC’s Internship Program: Modelling Uganda’s Human Resources
Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) is committed to nurturing future professionals through offering internship placements to students from across academic institutions. UPPC enrolled over 36 students to offer industrial training to enhance practical knowledge and skills students acquire at the University or technical institutions. The two-month internship program brought together students from Makerere University Business School, Islamic University in Uganda Female Campus, Busitema University, Nkumba University and Kyambogo University.
Over the course of their placement, the interns were attached to various departments, including Public and Corporate Affairs, Human Resources, Finance, ICT, Post Press, Publishing and Procurement, where they gained practical knowledge and hands-on experience in their fields of study and beyond, considering the UPPC’s approach of allowing human resources to explore other fields to gain extra skills. The program enabled interns to apply theoretical knowledge acquired in class while developing professional competencies, workplace ethics, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. The skills equipped to learners shall prepare them further for the work environment as employees and entrepreneurs.
The internship program is intended to bridge the gap between academic learning and the workplace needs. Through practical training, mentorship and exposure to a professional work environment, the Corporation equips students with industry-relevant skills while contributing to the development of a competent workforce to support national development. At the close of the internship period, UPPC on Friday 31st July 2026 held a farewell party for the interns, congratulating them upon advancing in their studies and encouraging them to put into practice the extra knowledge acquired at UPPC.
The Human Resource and Administration Officer, Mrs Dorothy Nanyanzi Ssentamu, commended the interns for their commitment, discipline and eagerness to learn throughout their placement. “Internship is an important bridge between academic learning and professional practice. We are proud to have contributed to your development and encourage you to remain committed to excellence, integrity and continuous learning as you pursue your careers,” said Nanyanzi, reiterating UPPC’s commitment to providing practical learning opportunities to students.
The interns took the opportunity during the farewell event to express appreciation to UPPC for providing a supportive learning environment and equipping them with practical skills that not only allowed them to fulfil a school requirement but also prepared them for the field of work. One of the grateful interns is Nicole Natulinda, attached to the Public and Corporate Affairs Department. Natulinda, a student of communication at Nkumba University, says, “The internship has given me practical exposure that cannot be obtained in the classroom. I am leaving with valuable knowledge, confidence and a better understanding of how a professional organization operates and how communication and public relations are organized”.
Another intern who shared their feedback with UPPC is Tracy Naume from Makerere University Business School. Naume had been attached to the Procurement Department. “The support, lessons, and real work experience I have gained here have meant a lot to me. I have learnt not just about procurement, but also about teamwork, discipline, and service. I’m truly grateful for the chance to grow with UPPC,” said Naume.
Aldo Emojong, who was attached to the Human Resource Department, was equally appreciative. “I am deeply thankful to UPPC for giving me the opportunity for an internship. Working with you has taught me so much about people, processes, and professionalism. Your support and willingness to teach me made my internship a valuable experience. Thank you for believing in young talent.” Expressed Emojong, a student of Busitema University.
UPPC’s internship program forms part of the Corporation’s broader commitment to supporting education and skills development by offering practical workplace experience to students from higher institutions of learning. Through such initiatives, the Corporation continues to strengthen collaboration between academics and the industry while contributing to the development of competent, innovative and job-ready graduates.
